Correction Dept. Investigating Death of Mentally Ill Inmate at Rikers Island

The New York City Correction Department is investigating the death of a mentally ill inmate who was found in an overheated cell last month at Rikers Island after being left unattended for hours, the authorities said Wednesday.

The inmate, identified as Jerome Murdough, 56, was a homeless former Marine who had been arrested on a trespassing charge. He was found dead in his cell at the Anna M. Kross Center at Rikers Island on Feb. 15, officials said.
