The media plays such a big role in getting the word out about Schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. It would be SO helpful, and very welcome, if it went the extra measure and educated itself, and in turn its audience, about the true facts of the mental illnesses, instead of merely reporting sensationally. Know this is expeditious, but its not responsible to society, nor true to the parties reported about.

Diane Froggatt is right on target concerning the treatment of chronic schizophrenia. More support needs to be given to families who have not deserted their loved ones afflicted with this destavating disease. I wish the NIMH would factor the family into their projects and AARA funding to those who care for their family members with chronic schizophrenia.

Grace, I totally agree with you and have advocated at many meetings, including NIMH exactly what you espouse. Interesting to hear from other organizations that they prefer the continued use of "Mental" instead of "Brain". When presenting, I emphasize the physical nature of brain illnesses and the central and most important organ of our body, the brain.
Thank you for your comments

STOP CALLING IT "MENTAL" HEALTH AND START CALLING IT "BRAIN" HEALTH. CALLING IT
"MENTAL" DISORDERS SOUNDS LIKE IT'S ALL IN YOU THOUGHTS. IT'S A FACT, THAT THE
DISORDERS MENTIONED ARE CAUSED BY "BRAIN" DISORDERS. YOU CAN'T BLAME SOMEBODY, IF THEIR BRAIN GETS SICK. THE BRAIN IS THE MOST INTRICATE BODY ORGAN
AND YET MANY PEOPLE THINK NOTHING CAN GO WRONG WITH IT. IT MAKES NO SENSE. CALL
IT A SICK BRAIN AND NOT A SICK MIND AND YOU WILL ELIMINATE THE STIGMA ATTACHED.
I HAVE ATTEMPTED SUICIDE 4X IN MY LIFE. IT WAS BUPROPION, THAT FINALLY "FIXED" MY
BRAIN. FOR THE LAST 3 YRS, I'M HAPPIER THAN I'VE EVER BEEN. MY BRAIN'S BEEN FIXED AND IT'S EVEN MADE ME MORE CREATIVE. I'M A CHANGED PERSON. THANK YOU FOR BRINGING ATTENTION TO THIS VERY IMPORTANT SUBJECT. THERE IS NO MORE IMPORTANT
ORGAN OF THE BODY, THAN THE BRAIN AND PEOPLE MUST UNDERSTAND, THAT THE BRAIN
CAN HAVE A DISORDER THE SAME AS THE HEART, LUNG, LIVER, KIDNEY, ETC. AND IT'S EVERY BIT AS PAINFUL.

It is my opinion that aggressive drug treatment is not the answer. What is the answer is the convalescent period and ongoing life that people with schizophrenia lead. On the whole they are very much neglected and housed in the community in dreary, unmotivating houses and residences which would depress and leave anyone unmotivated and dull of wit. Please, please will someone recognise this need for convalescent care and personal attention. Everyone needs personal attention and people with schizophrenia need sincere friendly caring to try to avoid the deterioration that happens because of lack of ongoing care and effective treatment. Early intervention clinics are great, but my concern is "What happens at the end of the specified 2 or 3 years of care?". It's like people fall off the end of the world at that point. There is no ongoing care procedure and so the results of early intervention are compromised.

Hi, this article was very interesting. It seemed to place an answer to what I had suspected regarding the link between childhood abuse and psychosis. I am grateful that an article such as this is out there so that researchers can begin to explore some of the environmental factors that may contribute to schizophrenia.

I'm looking forward to seeing the movie, having read the book some months ago after I heard an interview of Steve Lopez, the L.A. columnist, on WUWM/NPR public radio. I'm a NAMI family member, with a child challenged with Paranoid Schizoaffective Disorder, thus am very interested in having this story told to the public in hopes that it will both educate people and positively impact the problem of stigma surrounding mental illness. Ongoing advocacy is needed by and for the courageous people who daily meet such challenges of living that mental illness presents. Namaste
