While a vast industry attempts to show that schizophrenia is a "brain disease" it is remarkable that there is still no medical test that can identify someone as having schizophrenia. And while some point out that certain brain difference are found more frequently in people diagnosed with schizophrenia, those differences are also often not found, and they are also found some of the time in people who definitely don't have schizophrenia. Other studies show these same brain differences are often found in children who have been abused, suggesting they may be a reaction to life events, not the result of a "disease."
Furthermore, there are many stories of people making a full recovery from schizophrenia through psychological approaches and shifts in self understanding - a finding that is not common for example in diseases of the pancreas. So there is good reason to be cautious about making biological assumptions about "schizophrenia" and for using language which expresses openness to our uncertainty about what is really going on.

Depression Supplements: Several prescription medications are effective, however they don't always result in the full remission of symptoms and they are often poorly tolerated, especially in the elderly. There is a lot of cross over between anxiety and depression, with many people suffering from both concurrently. Similarly the medications and supplements used in depression also modulates the monoamines, namely serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. A few I have found helpful include Chromium Picolinate, Fish oil, 5-HTP, L-Methlyfolate St. John's Wort, and SAMe.

Linda,

Thank you for your compelling insights on yet another tragedy caused by lacked of mental health care for deeply ill individuals. We in the mental health world do not say "what a jerk he was for doing that". Instead we say "what a shame he did not get the help he needed". Virginia Tech. comes immediately to mind as well as John Hinkley.

Someone in my workplace is dealing with someone in her house who obviously has a mental illness but to her untrained eyes and ears, she thinks they are merely lazy and "a bitch". I am trying to inform her of what might be going on but I fear it is falling on deaf ears. How do we help these people?

A good place to start is to make it mandatory for schools and colleges to become more aware of and then report mental illness to parents. When treated early, recovery efforts have a better outcome.

HIPPA compliance could be assured by having students sign a release of information for reporting MI upon entering school.

Thanks,

Pam Moore, PMHNP

I agree with you 100%!

Why don't the the psychiatrists as a group get off their duffs and present a case before Congress? After all, Sirhan Sirhan, Hinckley and the U Bomber all had schizophrenia - if they had been helped with good resources, their crimes would not have happened. GV

The media plays such a big role in getting the word out about Schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. It would be SO helpful, and very welcome, if it went the extra measure and educated itself, and in turn its audience, about the true facts of the mental illnesses, instead of merely reporting sensationally. Know this is expeditious, but its not responsible to society, nor true to the parties reported about.
