“People with serious mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, die an average of 25 years younger than the general population.”
- National Association of State Mental Health Planning Directors, 2006
That is an appallingly, disturbing statistic. Schizophrenia and Related Disorders Alliance of America (SARDAA), a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, is working to help this underserved population their families.
SARDAA’s mission is to promote hope and recovery for persons with schizophrenia and related disorders. I am honored to serve on SARDAA’s National Board of Directors because of the wonderful people I know who struggle to find hope and help in their struggle for recovery. I know that people with this illness not only face difficult and at times debilitating symptoms, but they also face a society that stigmatizes and often isolates them.
One out of every one hundred people has schizophrenia. We can, and must, do something to improve their lives. They are our families, neighbors, friends and co-workers, and undoubtedly you know someone who is affected. By serving as a national voice representing all individuals whose lives are affected by schizophrenia, SARDAA will reduce stigma and ensure such individuals are able to lead lives to their full potential in the community. SARDAA programs include:
- Schizophrenics Anonymous (SA), a consumer-run support program founded over 20 years ago to help people recover in the community.
One thing is for sure: without accurate information, empowerment, recovery-oriented services and someone to turn to, an individual with schizophrenia has little hope of leading a life to their full potential. That is where you can help SARDAA to help improve lives.
